Chemung is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 2,368 at the 2020 census.
The town of Chemung was established in 1788 as the original town in the region. Chemung lost territory when Tioga County was formed in 1791. The town of Newtown (now the town of Elmira) was taken from Chemung in 1792. Chemung was incorporated in 1788 into Montgomery County, at the time of that towns formation.
Samuel Clemens, also known as Mark Twain, was married to a local Elmira woman and wrote many of his books here. Ernie Davis, the first African-American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. Elmira has also been the home of Eileen Collins, Tommy Hilfiger, Hal Roach and Brian Williams. The first Gannett newspaper.
In the Delaware dialect of the Algonquin language, the word Chemung means Place of the big horn. This harkens back to a time when Native Americans discovered large mammoth tusks along what is now the Chemung River.
