What is the purpose of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment?

Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) scale is an index to assess the sensorimotor impairment in individuals who have had stroke.

How long does the Fugl-Meyer Assessment take?

It takes approximately 30-35 minutes to administer the total FMA. Administration of the motor, sensation and balance subscores range from 34 to 110 minutes, with a mean administration time of 58 minutes. When the motor scale is administered on its own, it takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

How to do the Fugl-Meyer?

Verbal instructions: Straighten your arm in front of your body, palm downward; Initial position: Shoulder slightly flexed and/or abducted, elbow extended to 0, forearm pronated. End position: Shoulder slightly flexed and/or abducted, elbow extended to 0, forearm pronated, at least 15 dorsiflexion at wrist.
