A Resident of New Jersey is an individual that is domiciled in New Jersey for the tax year or an individual that maintains a permanent home in New Jersey and spends more than 183 days in the state. A Nonresident of New Jersey is an individual that was not domiciled in New Jersey.
The filing status options are: Single; Married/Civil Union Couple, filing joint return; Married/Civil Union Partner, filing separate return; Head of Household; or Qualifying Widow(er)/Surviving CU Partner.
Governor Murphy announced that New Jersey residents can use IRS Direct File for the 2025 tax filing if they lived in and earned all of their income in New Jersey; and plan to use the same filing status for both their federal and state income tax returns.
Eligibility is determined by specific income limits and other criteria. Residents can file applications electronically at .anchor.nj.gov or submit a paper application by mail as homeowners or tenants/renters to ANCHOR Application Revenue Processing Center, PO Box 636, Trenton, NJ 08646-0636.
Direct File is accessible in English and Spanish, and eligible taxpayers can access it and file at directfile.irs.gov using their smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Many taxpayers using Direct File are also able to complete their state taxes quickly and easily.
