The answer to your question is very simple. Almond cultivation is very expensive. It is a single harvest crop and the average annual produce is only around 2000lbs per acre. It is also a delicate product and needs special attention every step of the way during cultivation.
Some beekeepers reported moving honey bee colonies more than 2,000 miles to pollinate almonds. After pollinating almonds and other crops in the region, many beekeepers later return to the Great Northern Plains to support colony recuperation and honey production.
Pollination fees range from about $165 per colony to about $240 per colony depending on the number of bees in a hive. This wide range in pollination fees is due to some growers requiring more bees per colony for pollination than other growers.
These challenges also increase the amount of times the bees have to be moved to find natural resources at specific times of the year. More inputs and more moving means more costs to the beekeeper that must be passed along to all pollination customers including the almond industry.

People also ask

Honey bees are the most important pollinators because they can be managed and introduced to a crop. Because almonds flower early in the spring, in many situations they may be the only crop flowering in an area.
Technically, that means one 12-frame colony per acre or one and a half 8-frame colonies per acre would satisfy this requirement. Most growers have used a standard two hives per acre at an average of eight frames of bees per colony.
The average fee for the 2024 almond pollination season for the most common colony strength requirement (seven to nine frames) was $196 per colony, though this ranged from $100 to $220 per colony.
