What is the starting position in the Navy?

An enlisted member enters the Navy as a Seaman Recruit. After completing basic training, the enlisted recuits advances to Seaman. The next notable advancement is to a Noncommissioned Officer.

What do I need to know before joining the Navy?

Generally, you must: Be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien. Meet exacting physical, mental and moral standards. Have a high school diploma. Have a qualifying score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. Pass a Military Entrance Processing Station medical exam.

What do you start out as in the Navy?

Most Sailors will start as an E-1 (for Enlisted) or O-1 (for Officer), rise in rank within two years and continue to receive regular rank promotions as they serve. If you have college experience or other skills, you may start at a higher rank.

What is entry level Navy?

Seaman Recruit (E-1) Seaman recruit (SR) is the lowest enlisted rank in the Navy, just below seaman apprentice.
