In a straightforward case, it typically takes about six to eight weeks after filing for child support to start receiving payments. There are exceptions, though, and sometimes it can take longer to begin receiving these payments.
If you are not supporting another spouse or child, the garnishment limit is up to 60 percent of your disposable earnings. If you are more than 12 weeks behind on your child support payments when the earnings withholding order is issued, the court can order up to 65 percent of your disposable income to be garnished.
The varying yardsticks create some surprising results. For example, New Jersey ranks 47th in child support payments, even though its one of the most expensive states in which to live. Massachusetts is first, and Nevada second.
How long does it take to establish a child support order? Generally, a child support order will be established within 90-180 days.
After your child support order is finalized, you can expect to wait 30-60 days to receive your first child support payment. Once the Maryland court issues the child support order, the Child Support Administration (CSA) will generally issue an Earnings Withholding Order (EWO) in conjunction with it.
