2. How does this affect me? On September 1, 2019 all surcharge assessments were waived and no future surcharges will be assessed after. You will still be responsible for any other suspensions, fines or fees on your driving record.
Surcharges may be assessed for a driver accumulating more than a specified number of points on their driving record or for certain traffic crime convictions. The largest surcharges assessed by DPS are for people convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Avoiding DWI Surcharges in Texas The indigency program waives surcharges for individuals with incomes at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, while the incentive program can reduce the amount of surcharges for individuals above 125 percent but below 300 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

On September 1, 2019, Texas repealed the DRPand all of its related license suspensions. This means both the point system and the extra surcharges no longer exist. Previously, if you got a ticket, you had to pay an additional surcharge based on how many points you received.
Points are not assessed for these offenses. A conviction based surcharge will be assessed annually for three (3) years from the date of conviction. An individual also has the option to pay all three (3) years at once.
