The position of a radiation safety officer (RSO) is employed primarily by companies in the health care and medical research industries. Most companies are searching for applicants with a Bachelors degree in Health Physics, although some prefer Masters degrees and others will accept Associates degrees.
To be considered eligible for the RSO position, an individual must be a qualified radiographer, have a minimum of 2,000 hours (one year full-time field experience) of hands-on experience as a qualified radiographer, and have formal training in establishing and maintaining a radiation protection program.
Get Certified: After gaining work experience, you need to undergo training in radiation safety and acquire certification from a recognized body such as the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) or the Radiological Society of India (RSI). This certification is necessary to become an RSO.
The RSO must have the authority to enforce radiation safety policy, suspend activities deemed unsafe, and require remedial action when necessary.
There are three levels of RSOsLevel 1, 2 and 3. The first two levels require either a doctor in nuclear medicine or someone trained and with the practical experience to deal with small-time radiation exercises.
