Trauma is when we experience very stressful, frightening or distressing events that are difficult to cope with or out of our control. It could be one incident, or an ongoing event that happens over a long period of time. Most of us will experience an event in our lives that could be considered traumatic.
In the U.S., the scope of trauma registry case criteria tends to be limited to the most seriously injured individuals who receive hospital care for blunt or penetrating traumatic injuries or burns. Trauma registries are used primarily to monitor and evaluate trauma care at the hospital, regional, and State levels.
The trauma registry holds information related to the location of a traumatic event and the victims involved in the event. Using the information gathered through the registry, trauma programs are able to design specific prevention programs which will best meet the needs of the community.
