When should you get a PPD test?

In a person who is newly infected, the skin test usually becomes positive within 4 to 10 weeks after exposure to the person who is ill with TB. (See Tuberculosis infection (latent tuberculosis) in adults: Approach to diagnosis (screening).)

Is a PPD test the same as a TB test?

The Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST) is performed by injecting a small amount of fluid (called tuberculin) into the skin in the lower part of the arm. A person given the TST must return within 48 to 72 hours to have a trained healthcare worker look for a reaction on the arm; this must be done in person.

When should PPD test be done?

It takes 2 to 8 weeks after initial infection with TB bacteria for the immune system to be able to react to PPD and for the infection to be detected by the TB skin test.

How soon after being exposed to TB should you be tested?

CDC discourages a testing approach that is independent of a risk assessment. Frequency of testing depends on a persons risk factors. This could range from one-time only testing among persons at low risk for future TB exposure to annual testing among those at continued risk of exposure.

What are the CDC guidelines for TB testing?

The TST is an intradermal injection of 0.1 ml of tuberculin (PPD) on the inner surface of the forearm. The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration.
