It employed 6000 vacuum tubes, had a power consumption of 56,000 watts, and had 5.5 Kb of memory. EDVAC was one of the earliest stored-program computers, with the program instructions held in memory, and the machine did not need to be physically rewired to solve a different problem.
The EDVAC computer was the first modern, electronic stored-program computer to be designed. It was, however, never produced to the original plan.
ENIAC, short for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, EDVAC: Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer. IBM:International Business Machines Corporation. EDSAC:Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator. UNIVAC:Universal Automatic Computer.
It would accelerate the work of the computer, simplify its circuitry, and make possible much more ambitious programming. The stored-program idea spread rapidly, gaining impetus from a lucid description by one of the most famous mathematicians in the world, John von Neumann, who had taken an interest in EDVAC.
ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) was the worlds first general-purpose computer. ENIAC was designed and built for the United States Army to calculate artillery firing tables. However, it was ENIACs power and general-purpose programmability that excited the publics imagination.

The major upgrade in EDVAC was the fact that it had memory that allowed the storage of the execution code (program). EDVACs memory was provided through the use of mercury delay lines, and the binary system was used instead of the decimal system, which simplified its construction.
EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer) was the successor to the ENIAC computer (Fig. 23.3). It was a stored program computer and it cost $500,000. Eckert and Mauchly proposed it in 1944, and design work commenced prior to the completion of ENIAC.
The design features of EDVAC served as a model for many later computers. EDVAC was the first internally stored program computer to be built, a major improvement over the ENIAC. One of the major disadvantages of the ENIAC had been the fact that it required considerable human effort to change to different programs.
The EDVAC computer was the first modern, electronic stored-program computer to be designed. It was, however, never produced to the original plan. When eventually redesigned and constructed, it was unreliable and heavily modified.
These computers fast and could calculate data in millisecond. Vacuum tubes were the only electronic component available during those days. Vacuum tube technology made possible to make electronic digital computers. Easily available and inexpensive.
