Intake is where the child protection process begins. It is where the first assessment of safety and risk occurs. All subsequent intervention depends on the quality of information obtained at intake (Casey Family Programs, 2018a).
The child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling and/or behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families.
The intake session is the first, official, full-length appointment with the child therapist. Typically most of the intake session with a younger child is with the parent(s) only. Parents need time to tell their story and for the therapist to gather relevant social and emotional information, as well as family history.
The primary purpose of the intake session is to build rapport between the child and the therapist while identifying unique strengths and challenges the child faces. This process can be achieved through questions but also informal activities like games and dance, helping the child relax and enjoy the process.
Mental health is an individuals cognitive, behavioural and emotional wellbeing (Mind, 2020). Its something we all have - including every child and young person. We use the term mental health issues to refer to mental health problems, conditions and mental illnesses.
