Morris Township was originally formed as of March 25, 1740. The township was named for Lewis Morris, colonial governor of New Jersey. Portions of the township were taken on December 24, 1740, to form Roxbury Township and on March 29, 1749, to form Mendham Township.
History. Named in honor of Lewis Morris, the first Governor of the State of New Jersey, this park was the first to be opened in the Morris County Park Commission in March 1958 with 350 acres. The first parcel was acquired on December 31, 1956 from Mount Kimble Corp.
Although best known as the location of Gen. George Washingtons winter headquarters during the Revolutionary War, Morristown also offers many modern delights, including a friendly downtown with interesting shops, restaurants and entertainment.
