Collector plates were first issued in 1975. They are available for unmodified vehicles 20 years old or older. The usage restrictions are much lighter than on Antique plates, and they are so unrestrictive many people register vehicles that qualify for Antique plates under Collector plates.
​The owner of a Collector vehicle must own or lease one other motor vehicle for regular transportation with current, valid registration in Wisconsin under the same name(s) as the collector vehicle. If jointly owned, each owner must own or lease a vehicle with valid registration in Wisconsin to qualify.
A car is considered a classic in Wisconsin if its at least 20 years old and has not been altered from the original vehicle. When a vehicle in Wisconsin meets these requirements, the owner can register it as a collectors vehicle, which will limit the cars use.
​Collector special license plates are available to any Wisconsin motorist who has one or more vehicles registered with Collector plates. They may be issued to a vehicle of any age used for general transportation. The applicant for Collector special plates must be an owner or lessee of the vehicle.
Hobbyist license plate numbers are assigned to the vehicle owner for a lifetime and the registration does not expire. A letter suffix is added to the number (i.e., 1A, 1B, etc.) for each subsequent hobbyist vehicle owned by the same person.
