The genetic origins of the breed include the Shire, the Clydesdale, and the native British ponies such as the Dales. The Gypsy Vanner is not a color breed. It is a body type with heavy bone and broad body like a draft, but with the majority of the breed standing 14-15 hands at the withers.
The Dales, a draught pony, preserved the bone, feather, and pulling capabilities derived from the Shire and Clydesdale breeds but in a smaller and therefore more economical package. The Dales and, to a lesser extent, the Fell Pony interbred with the Shire and Clydesdale provided the basis of todays Gypsy Horse.
Thanks to increased freedom of movement between Ireland, Britain and the various other breeding hotspots around the world, the Gypsy Vanner (now less offensively known as the Irish Cob in most places) became a refined and recognisable breed, with exacting standards upheld worldwide.
It originated from crossing Thoroughbred, Connemara pony, and Irish Draught horses. The first known Gypsy Horses to come to America arrived in 1996, imported by Dennis and Cindy Thompson, who created the Gypsy Vanner name and started a breed society.
The discussion revolves around the cost of stud fees for Gypsy Vanner horses, with various breeders sharing their prices and factors that influence the cost, such as location, quality, and color. A quality stallion with proven show record, assessment is $2,000 plus.
