Seizure Action Plans can help you organize your seizure information and have it available when and where you need it. A prepared plan can help you know what to do to prevent an emergency or tell others what to do in emergency situations. You can also adapt these plans to different situations in your life.
The initial treatment for a seizure is to ensure the clients safety and protect them from injury. This may involve removing potentially dangerous objects from their surroundings, loosening tight clothing, and providing a cushion or pillow under their head. Gently turn the client onto their side after a seizure.
The plan should include important information about the person receiving care, including their: Name, date of birth, and contact information. Health condition(s). Medicines, dosages, and when/how they are given. Health care providers with contact information. Health insurance information. Emergency contacts.
If a patient is having a seizure, the nurse should lower them to the ground, protect their head, and roll them on their side. Their role includes providing education, administering ordered medications, and ensuring patient safety. The phase that comes after the seizure is the postictal phase.
Information should include what happened before, during and after the event and should be recorded in a step-by-step fashion, exactly as the event unfolded. In some instances, families may also be asked to record video events if safe to do so.
