Your eye doctor will have you read the rows of letters from the top downwithout glasses or contactsto determine the smallest row you can see clearly. That smallest row you can identify accurately determines your visual acuity score.
Normal vision used to be known as 20/20 vision; this is now called 6/6 vision. The letters on a Snellen (or logMAR) chart are arranged in lines that become smaller the further down you look.
Heres how it works: The smallest line of text that you can read accurately determines your visual acuity. For instance, if you can read the line that most people with normal vision read at 6 meters, you have 6/6 vision. If you can only read it at 9 meters, your vision would be noted as 6/9.
Types of visual acuity tests Dynamic visual acuity test: Your eye care specialist will hold your head and move it back and forth while you perform a visual acuity test. Pinhole visual acuity test: Pinhole visual acuity tests diagnose nearsightedness. Random E chart: This test is similar to the Snellen eye chart.
Positive numbers on an eye prescription indicate they are correcting farsightedness, while negative numbers correct shortsightedness. A larger number suggests a stronger prescription.
