There are three types of Article 15 proceedings: Summarized. Any company grade commander may administer this type of Article 15. Company Grade. Any company grade commander may administer this type of Article 15. Field Grade. A commander in the rank of major or above may administer this type of Article 15.
Level of Offense: NJP is meant for minor offenses under the UCMJthe kind of infractions that warrant discipline but are not severe crimes​. For more serious offenses (for example, felonies or serious military crimes), the military bypasses NJP and goes straight to a court martial​.
Under Article 15, a commanding officer can impose penalties such as reduction in rank, extra duties, restriction to base, forfeiture of pay, or written reprimands​. Confinement (jail time) or a dishonorable discharge cannot be given as NJP punishments​.
The authority for commanders to give an Article 15 is found in what is called Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. An Article 15 is considered non-judicial punishment, meaning that it is not considered a judicial proceeding. Non-judicial punishment is a military justice option available to commanders.
Nonjudicial punishments name is drawn from the authorizing statute Article 15, UCMJ. It is known by different names in different services: Article 15, NJP, and Captains Mast are among the most common.
