A First Article Inspection or FAI is the inspection of one to three pieces from the beginning of the production run. The FAI is not limited to a single piece as the name might imply and these pieces do not specifically have to be the first ones. They can also be randomly selected from an initial lot.
Heres how you can create a First Article Inspection Report in five steps. Step 1: Pre-plan your FAI. Before beginning, gather the documentation needed for your First Article Inspection: Step 2: Create an inspection plan. Step 3: Manufacture the part. Step 4: Collect data. Step 5: Create report.
The number of units assessed in a First Article Inspection report depends on the order size. For production orders, a typical FAI will cover 35 units, chosen at random. For a very small batch or a run of prototypes it may only cover the first unit.
For the supplier, an FAI is an opportunity to evaluate the manufacturability of a part, ensure completeness of the design documentation, identify design errors, recommend design changes to improve manufacturability, and establish the manufacturing process and supply chain for the part.
You can do a full or partial FAI depending on your production circumstances. For example, a full FAI is needed for new parts or facilities, but you can do a partial FAI when there are changes to a parts design or the production process.
