San Antonio was seized twice in the Mexican invasions of 1842. The citys history of conflict made it one of the most fought-over cities in North America. After Texas entered the Union, growth became rapid, as the city became a servicing and distribution center for the western movement of the United States.
They named the place and river San Antonio in his honor. It was years before any Spanish settlement took place. Father Antonio de Olivares visited the site in 1709, and he was determined to found a mission and civilian settlement there.
Specifically, the municipality was created in 1731 when 55 Canary Islanders settled near the system of missions that had been established around the source of the San Antonio River. The new settlement was named after the Presidio San Antonio de Bjar, the Spanish military outpost that protected the missions.
San Antonio was crucial during both the beginning and end of the open-range period in American ranching culture. During the postbellum period, San Antonio remained a frontier city. Its isolation and diverse array of cultures gave it the reputation of being an exotic place.
Known today as The Alamo, this Spanish mission complex was the first of six San Antonio missions founded by Catholic missionaries along the San Antonio River in the early 1700s. The mission was a town and learning center to acculturate the local indigenous people to Christianity and Spanish life.
