Visual acuity is recorded as chart distance (numerator) over the number of the lowest line read (denominator): If the patient reads the 6/6 line but gets 2 letters incorrect, you would record this as 6/6 (-2). If the patient gets more than 2 letters wrong, then the previous line should be recorded as their acuity.
What visual acuity requirements must be met? AWS B5. 1, clause 6.1, requires welding inspectors of all levels to pass an eye examination, with or without corrective lenses, to prove near vision acuity, in at least one eye, on Jaeger J2 letters or smaller at a distance not less than 12 inches.

To test visual acuity, use a Snellen chart and have the patient wear glasses or contact lenses if they normally wear them. Tell the patient to first cover the right eye, then left eye, and lastly read the chart with both eyes.
You must have visual acuity in at least one eye capable of reading the Jaeger J1 test chart, or equivalent to 20/20, at a distance of not less than 30 cm (12in.) You must be able to differentiate between the colors used in the NDT method(s) for which certification is required.

20/40 indicates that the line you correctly read at 20 feet (6 meters) away can be read by a person with normal vision from 40 feet (12 meters) away. Outside of the United States, the visual acuity is expressed as a decimal number. For example, 20/20 is 1.0, 20/40 is 0.5, 20/80 is 0.25, 20/100 is 0.2, and so on.
Visual acuity (VA) is a measure of the ability of the eye to distinguish shapes and the details of objects at a given distance. It is important to assess VA in a consistent way in order to detect any changes in vision. One eye is tested at a time.
20/20 vision refers to normal vision, not perfect vision. Visual acuity is a term that means clarity or sharpness of vision and that the objects you see are crisply outlined and not blurry.
