Alaskas indigenous people, who are jointly called Alaska Natives, can be divided into five major groupings: Aleuts, Northern Eskimos (Inupiat), Southern Eskimos (Yuit), Interior Indians (Athabascans) and Southeast Coastal Indians (Tlingit and Haida).
Lawrence Island Yupik live in the north and northwest parts of Alaska; Yupik and Cupik Alaska Natives live in southwest Alaska; the Athabascan peoples live in Alaskas interior; and south-central Alaska and the Aleutian Islands are the home of the Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) and Unangax peoples.
In general, there are five groups of Alaska Native people identified by region Iupiat St. Lawrence Island Yupik in the Arctic; Athabascan in Southcentral and Interior Alaska; Yupik Cupik, Unangax̂ and Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) in Southwest Alaska; and Eyak, Haida, Tsimshian, and Tlingit in the Inside Passage.
When the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act passed, 13 Alaska Native regional corporations were created and each enrolled Alaska Native individual received 100 shares of stock in their regional and/or village corporation. These shares of stock represent ownership of the corporation.
