The Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE), also known as the Folstein Test, is a fast and simple test to quantify cognitive function and loss as occurs in the early stages of Alzheimers disease and other dementias. It has been available to the public for free for almost 50 years.
The MMSE was developed in 1975 as a global assessment of cognitive status. A perfect score is 30 points; a score of 24 is the recommended,4 and most frequently used,2 cutpoint for dementia; a score of 23 or lower indicates dementia.
MMSE score, for example, denotes the severity of cognitive impairment as follows: mild Alzheimers disease: MMSE 2126, moderate Alzheimers disease: MMSE 1020, moderately severe Alzheimers disease: MMSE 1014, severe Alzheimers disease: MMSE less than 10.
