Scotch whisky must be matured for a minimum of three years. If a bottle of Scotch whisky shows an age statement, e.g. 12 Years Old means that the youngest whisky in the bottle is at least 12 years old. Scotch is bottled at a variety of ages, from 3 years to 50 years.
Straight bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years, but straight bourbon aged between two to four years must display an age statement on the bottle indicating the age of the youngest spirit in the bottle. Straight bourbon aged over four years requires no age statement.
No surprises to learn that No Age Statement (often referred to as NAS whisky) simply refers a whisky with no specified age. All Scotch whisky, by law, must be at least three years and a day old. Indeed, it cannot be called whisky before this date under the 2009 Scotch Whisky Regulations.
A legal minimum age is the age at which a person is legally permitted to engage in an activity, for example: vote, work, marry, or leave education. Legal minimum ages are related to important issues such as child labour, child soldiers, criminal liability and early marriage.
An age statement states the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. A 12-year-old blended Scotch whisky, for example, may include whiskies of many ages but the youngest one in the bottle will be 12 years old. The age in age statement refers to the length of the maturation process.
