Families must have at least one qualifying child under 6 years old at the end of the tax year, must file a California state tax return, and meet the requirements of the CalEITC. Taxpayers do not need to have earned income to be eligible however, you must otherwise meet CalEITC and YCTC requirements.
What is Form 8812? The Schedule 8812 Form is found on Form 1040, and its used to calculate the alternative refundable credit known as the additional child tax credit. For example, if the amount you owe in taxes is either zero or less than the credit, you cannot claim the full child tax credit of $2,000.
The child has to be younger than 17 at the end of the tax year and cannot provide more than half of their own financial support. Finally, each child you claim a credit for has to have have lived with you for more than half of the tax year.
If the credit exceeds income taxes owed, taxpayers can receive up to $1,700 per child of the balance as a refund, known as the additional child tax credit (ACTC) or refundable portion of the CTC. The ACTC is limited to 15 percent of earnings above $2,500 (figure 1).
At a glance: The ACTC is the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit. Making part of the CTC refundable ensures low-income filers can still take advantage of the credit, even if they dont make enough to owe federal income tax.
