Eligible families will receive advance payments, either by direct deposit or check. Each payment will be up to $300 per month for each child under age 6 and up to $250 per month for each child ages 6 through 17.
The new law made the TCJAs $2,000 per child base credit permanent and increased it to $2,200 per child effective in 2025 (and adjusted for inflation in years after).
In 2021, that credit was expanded to give families up to $3,600, much of it in the form of monthly checks, instead of an annual lump sum. The 2021 expansion allowed the poorest families in the country, those who dont file income taxes, to access the child tax credit for the first time in its history.
The American Rescue Plan also authorized advance monthly payments of the Child Tax Credit through December 2021. Beginning in July and running through December, qualifying families can get up to: $300 a month per child for children ages 0 to 5. $250 a month per child for children ages 6 to 17.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA; P.L. 117-2) expanded the child tax credit for tax year 2021 only. The law raised the maximum value of the credit in 2021 to $3,600 per child age 0-5 and $3,000 for other qualifying children.

The Child Tax Credit can be worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child for the 2024 tax year and up to $2,200 for 2025. However, the maximum credit can be reduced if your modified adjusted gross income is above a certain amount.
You can claim the Child Tax Credit by entering your children and other dependents on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and attaching a completed Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents.
