The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child (tax year 2024). If you owe less tax than the total of your CTC, you can use Schedule 8812 to claim up to $1,700 as a refundable credit through the Additional Child Tax Credit.
Who can claim both? Many taxpayers qualify for both the CTC and ACTC in the same tax year. For example, if youre eligible for the full credit of $2,200 in 2025 but only owe $1,000 in taxes, youll use $1,000 of the credit to reduce your liability to zero.
Youll need to check your 1040 form to know if youve claimed either or both of the credits. Itll be on Earned Income Credit (EIC) line 27, Additional Child Tax Credit line 28. The law also allowed dependents who do not qualify for the $2,000 credit to qualify for a nonrefundable credit worth up to $500 per dependent. This credit is often referred to as the other dependent tax credit or ODTC. The laws changes to the credit were temporary and originally scheduled to expire after 2025.
Child Tax Credit 2025 payments In the 2025 tax year, the CTC will not be paid out in the form of payments. Instead, its a tax benefit that can provide families with up to $2,200 in tax relief per qualifying child. If your tax is already $0, you could get up to $1,700 per qualifying child as a refund.
