While government workers are generally entitled to time off for federal holidays, private employers are not legally required to do so. For private sector employees, time off on federal holidays depends on the individual employers policies, employment contracts, and, if applicable, collective bargaining agreements.
Although many states recognize most or all federal holidays as state holidays, the federal government cannot enact laws to compel them to do so. States can recognize other days as state holidays that are not federal holidays.
*If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).) If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes.
