UIL MARCHING CONTEST Bands march shows of no less than 5 minutes and no more than 8 minutes to be given a rating by each of three independent judges: 1=superior; 2=excellent; 3=good; 4=fair; 5=poor.
Solo and Ensemble events in band, choir and orchestra are scheduled in all UIL Music Regions. Students earning a Division One Rating at the region competition are eligible to advance to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest traditionally hosted in Austin on Memorial Day Week-end.
Solo and Ensemble Contest A judge will listen to the performance, write comment to the performer(s) and assign a rating (1=superior; 2=excellent; 3=good; 4=fair; 5=poor) based on the preparation and performance.
Rating II: An exceptional performance in many respects but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects in performance or to ineffective interpretation- a grade of 21-26: EXCELLENT.
Division 1 rating for a solo receives a gold medal. Division 2 rating for a solo receives a silver medal. Division 1 rating for an ensemble receives a bronze medal for each ensemble member.
