French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet explored the Illinois River in 1673. Marquette soon after founded a mission at the Grand Village of the Illinois in Illinois Country.
Illinois, the prairie state, once contained an estimated 22,000,000 acres of its dominant plant community type, native prairie. After the invention of the self-scouring steel plow in 1837, the rich prairie soils quickly were converted into some of the most fertile cropland in the world.
About 54,000 species have been identified as living in Illinois, not counting bacteria. This great variety of life is due to the many habitat types in the state. Habitats continually change, and a habitat with many species is more likely to adapt to and survive changes than one with a few types of organisms.
Common examples of pioneer species include bacteria, lichen, mosses, and fungi. In the ocean they can be phytoplankton, zooplankton, and algae.
Characteristics. Pioneer species have several qualities in common. They have adaptations to help them colonize harsh sterile environments; they tend to germinate, grow, mature, and reproduce quickly; and they produce large numbers of offspring, either asexually or through wind-dispersed pollen, spores, and seeds.

Pioneer species, such as aspen or white birch, grow fast but are short-lived. Their size at maturity is much smaller than species such as sugar maple.
