Situated in Richland County in Southern Illinois is the small city of Olney which has just over 8,700 residents. The city was founded in 1841 and is best known for one thing: albino squirrels.
It is known for its abolition of slavery, its role in the Underground Railroad, and its contributions to the American automotive industry. Illinois is also home to the first McDonalds, Route 66, and the worlds largest catsup bottle.
Throughout the 1700s other tribes moved into the area including the Iroquois, the Chippewa, the Potawatomi, and the Miami. In 1673, French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were the first Europeans to arrive in Illinois.
Native American tribes in Illinois were all Algonquian-speaking peoples: in the north were the Kickapoo, Sauk, and Fox; in the Lake Michigan area the Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Ojibwa (Chippewa); on the central prairies the Kaskaskia and Peoria; and in the south the Cahokia and Tamaroa.
