The final score/index ranges from 0-100. A score of 0-20 reflects minimal disability, 21-40 moderate disability, 41-60 severe disability, 61-80 crippled, and 81-100 bed-bound. Minimal clinical difference has been evaluated across numerous types of spinal surgery, and has been shown to vary significantly.
Scores from 0% to 20% indicate minimal disability; 20% to 40%, moderate disability; 40% to 60%, severe disability; 60% to 80%, crippled; and 80% to 100%, bedbound or exaggerating. Changes in scores can infer meaning because of the well-defined responsiveness and MCID.
Scoring: 1. The ODI is made up of 10 questions, scored from 0-5 (minimum to maximum). 2. The point total from each section is summed, divided by the total points possible of all sections answered, and multiplied by 100 to create a percentage disability from 0-100%, with a lower percentage indicating less disability.
The test can be interpreted as a raw score, with a maximum score of 50, or as a percentage. 0 points or 0% means : no activity limitations , 50 points or 100% means complete activity limitation. A higher score indicates more patient-rated disability.
