People of the Quinault The Quinault Indian Nation (QIN) consists of descendants of the Quinault, Queets, Quileute, Hoh, Chehalis, Chinook, and Cowlitz people. Our ancestors lived on a major physical and cultural dividing line.
The Quinault were excellent canoe builders, and in their large ocean-going canoes, they were the southernmost coastal Indigenous nation to hunt whales. Like other Coast Salish tribes, the Quinault traditionally lived in large houses, holding from two to ten families, in about twenty villages.
The Quinault Indian Nation is located on the southwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, and spans over 208,150 acres. The Nation includes the Quinault and Queets tribes and the descendants of five other coastal tribes: Quileute, Hoh, Chehalis, Chinook, and Cowlitz.
Overview. For thousands of years, the term Quinault referred to the people who made their homes within the watershed of the Quinault River. To the north live the Queets, Quileutes, Hohs and Makahs; and to the south lived the Copalis, Humptulips, Wishkah, Chinook, and Chehalis.
