Coast Salish territory covers the coast of British Columbia and Washington state. Within traditional Coast Salish art there are two major forms; the flat design and carving, and basketry and weaving.
Coast Salish design is comprised of ovals (or circles), trigons, crescents and extended crescents (which resemble, but are not, u-forms). In contrast, formline art (the design style of Coastal Indigenous groups farther north, such as the Haida peoples) is comprised mainly of ovoids and u-forms.
Traditional art forms include baskets, hats, capes, blankets, carved wooden household items, masks, paddles, canoes, totem poles, screens, bentwood boxes, stone carvings, and copper works. Northwest Coast art tells stories, teaching history and passing wisdom from generation to generation.
What is Indigenous Art - the types of media used painting on leaves. wood carving. rock carving or painting. sand (ochre) painting. body painting. sculpture. ceremonial clothing. weaponry.
Coast Salish art uses three main design elements (Circle, cresent, and trigon) to create an image. Each design element has a symbolic relationship to the culture.
