Founded in 1917 by the Planters Association, it was designed as a memorial to Samuel Mahelona, son of Emma Kauikeolani Napoleon Mahelona Wilcox. She was the wife of Albert Wilcox. Since Samuel Mahelona died at a young age of tuberculosis, the hospital was designed to serve tuberculosis patients on Kauai.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue is Americas oldest operating hospital, established in 1736. We have a long and distinguished history of innovative contributions to public health, medical science, and education.
In 1973, it was designated by the Ministry of Health as a Regional Hospital. In 1974, it was upgraded to 200 bed capacity hospital hence in 1975, a six storey main building was constructed with funds from the national government and partly from the Marcos Foundation.
When admitted to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, a patients care is coordinated by a team of hospitalist physicians. These physicians are on-site 24 x 7 closely monitoring any changes in patient conditions and adjusting care as needed.
