CFLs produce light differently than incandescent bulbs. In an incandescent, electric current runs through a wire filament and heats the filament until it starts to glow. In a CFL, an electric current is driven through a tube containing argon and a small amount of mercury vapor.
Though linear fluorescents were first invented in the early 1900s, the CFL advancement didn't come until around 1960.
To understand LED light benefits, it's important to understand the difference between the two bulbs. LED light bulbs produce light when an electrical current passes through them. In CFL bulbs an electric current flows between electrodes at each end of a gas-filled tube.
All compact fluorescent lamps require a slight warm-up time for the electrical current to fully heat the cathodes and reach their full lumen output.
While they developed a patent for their bulb, they couldn't find a way to produce it feasibly. Two years later in 1976, Edward Hammer at General Electric figured out how to bend the fluorescent tube into a spiral shape, creating the first compact fluorescent light (CFL).

1976 \u2013 Edward E. Hammer invented the compact fluorescent light (CFL) after discovering a way to bend fluorescent tubes into a spiral shape in response to the 1973 oil crisis. These bulbs last 10 times longer than incandescent lights and use 75 percent less energy.
The white powder coating inside the glass tubing of a CFL contains a fluorescent coating. When electricity enters a CFL, mercury and argon fumes inside the bulb produce invisible ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV light reacts with the fluorescent coating to produce the white, visible light you see when you turn on a CFL.

Compact fluorescents are being used in residential applications replacing incandescent and halogen lights. They provide relatively shadow-free lighting in residential applications and because of their small size can fit nicely into sconces, ceiling lights and table lamps.
