It has backronyms like Tried and Keep trying. In some colleges this system is implemented as Supplementary Examinations especially in Engineering Colleges under the Central Government.
In general, a student can pass a year with a maximum of 4 supplementary exams.
Over 2,000 engineering students with more than five ATKTs in their lower classes will lose a year as they will not be given admission to the final year in the current academic session.
kt and year down If you get more than the kt rule of the academic year, then you will get a drop or year down. This means, you cannot get admission into the next academic year until you clear the backlog of kts that has accumulated.
Backlogs are also known popularly as ATKTs. If a student fails in any particular subject at the end of semester examination, he/she will get a backlog against that subject.

Including end-semester and internals, you can have a maximum of 8 KTs in the first year. You need to clear your first-year KTs by the end of 2nd year, i.e. 4th semester. Students aren't allowed to carry any first-year KT to the third year.
you have to clear the kt's and keep them in the maximum 5 limit. Until then you are not eligible for the next year admission. You can opt for revaluation if your marks are really close to the passing marks.
Some universities call it ATKT (allowed to keep term), some call it CP (Carry Papers), some call it backlog etc. If the fail papers are more, a student is declared as Failed or Dropped and not allowed to move ahead unless he clears his backlogs.
A) A student shall be allowed to keep term (ATKT) in Third Year only if he/she fails in not more than Two Subjects in each of semester I and semester II of First Year. And he/she must have passed Second Year semester III and semester IV in full.
An internal KT is one where you fail in the mid term tests. Mumbai university MCA program has 2 mid term tests per semester. Each test is 20 marks and so the average of two tests matters. It does not matter if you have passed in one and failed in other, THE AVERAGE MATTERS.
