The 1835 transfer Before the final voyage in November 1835, at a meeting on Somes Island, Ngāti Mutunga transferred their rights to land around the harbour to Te Āti Awa and other Taranaki chiefs.
Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama were two tribes from Taranaki. They occupied adjacent territories in north Taranaki and were closely related through intermarriage and shared ancestry.
The Iwi of Raukawa descends from the eponymous ancestor, Raukawa. Raukawa is the eldest child of his father Tūrongo of the Tainui waka and his mother, the celebrated Māhina-a-rangi of the Takitimu waka.
