In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and authors name along with other information related to the type of citation.
Endnotes are single-spaced with double-spaced between. Each first footnote or endnote entry must include the authors name, the title, the source or publisher, and the date of publication. Entries from a book or periodical must include page numbers. (Omit portions of this information only if it is not available.)
In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and authors name along with other information related to the type of citation.
The footnote number should be in superscript, and be placed after any punctuation, like this: Heres a direct quote.
Leave no space between the superscript (note number) in the text and the word or mark of punctuation it follows. Place the superscript before a dash but after all other marks of punctuation.
Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page they refer to. This is convenient for the reader but may cause your text to look cluttered if there are a lot of footnotes. Endnotes appear all together at the end of the whole text. This may be less convenient for the reader but reduces clutter.
At the bottom of a page, right-click the footnote text area, click Note Options, and then click Convert. Finally, click Convert all footnotes to endnotes. To convert one footnote to an endnote: At the bottom of the page, right-click the text of a footnote, and then click Convert to Endnote.
Always place the note number after punctuation, and not after the authors name.
If you do place a note in the middle of a sentence, for example at the end of a quotation, the number should always come before a dash. Notes should always end with a full stop.
OSCOLA is based on the use of footnotes. Place the footnote marker at the end of the sentence, unless it needs to be next to a specific word or phrase for the sake of clarity.
