A commutation of sentence is also known simply as a commutation. It is a form of reprieve granted to federal prisoners by the President of the United States. If a commutation gets granted, the prisoners sentence gets reduced, but the prisoners other rights dont get restored.
A commutation of sentence reduces a sentence, either totally or partially, that is then being served, but it does not change the fact of conviction, imply innocence, or remove civil disabilities that apply to the convicted person as a result of the criminal conviction.
Arizona is also one of the only states that requires almost all prisoners to serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed, no matter the crime or the prisoners rehabilitation behind bars.
Some grounds for commutation of a sentence are good behavior, illness, old age, or when the sentence is unreasonably harsh in comparison to other similar cases.
