Many citizens of Shawano believe the lake, county, and city (Town of Shawanaw founded 1853 and changed to Shawano in 1856), were named after Chief Sawanoh. A historical marker placed in 1958 near the lake along Highway 22 states the lake was named as the southern boundary of Chippewa (Ojibwe) territory.
The City of Shawano is a thriving and growing community located 40 miles west of the Green Bay area in northeastern Wisconsin. With a population of 9,200 residents, the City offers excellent schools, 24 parks, miles of hiking and biking trails, safe neighborhoods, healthy economic growth, and a reemerging downtown.
Construction of the dam was no small task but was completed in 1892 and spanned the Wolf River which was almost 350 feet wide and held an 11-foot head of water. Soon after the dam was completed, a shoe factory, sawmills, and the pulp and paper industries were attracted to the Shawano based on the dams potential.
