Theres no universal cutoff for anxiety levels as with other tests, but State Trait Anxiety Inventory scores could be grouped as: 20-37: Low anxiety. 38-44: Moderate anxiety. 45-80: High anxiety.
The STAI has 40 items, 20 items allocated to each of the S-Anxiety and T-Anxiety subscales. There is also a STAI for children (STAIC) with the same number of items. Short versions of the scales have been developed independently (2-4).
Description of Measure: The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is a commonly used measure of trait and state anxiety (Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, Jacobs, 1983). It can be used in clinical settings to diagnose anxiety and to distinguish it from depressive syndromes.
The range of possible scores for form Y of the STAI varies from a minimum score of 20 to a maximum score of 80 on both the STAI-T and STAI-S subscales. STAI scores are commonly classified as no or low anxiety (20-37), moderate anxiety (38-44), and high anxiety (45-80).
The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is a psychological assessment tool that measures two types of anxiety: state anxiety, which is temporary and situation-dependent, and trait anxiety, which reflects a stable characteristic of an individuals general fearfulness.
