What is the i-9 form?

Expires 05/31/2027. Employers and employees must complete their respective sections of Form I-9. The form is used to document verification of the identity and employment authorization of each new employee (both U.S. citizen and alien) hired after November 6, 1986, to work in the United States.

When did I-9 forms become mandatory?

On April 2, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a new version of Form I-9, which bears a Jan. 20, 2025, edition date and is available for download. This version of the form will be valid through May 31, 2027.

Who is exempt from Form I-9?

You are required to complete and retain a Form I-9 for every employee you hire for employment in the United States, except for: Individuals hired on or before Nov. 6, 1986, who are continuing in their employment and have a reasonable expectation of employment at all times.
