Mary Ann Magnin founded I. Magnin in the 1870s (!) and named it after her husband Isaac because a womans name on a business enterprise wasnt socially acceptable at the time. Her son Joseph had a falling out with the family, so he left to start his own company Joseph Magnin. People have fond memories of both!
Mary Ann Magnin I. Magnin / Founder
Macys bought I Magnins in 1994 and closed it on 8 January 1995. Herb Caen wrote an elegy in his San Francisco Chronicle column: The interior was dazzling, especially the great main hall, two stories high, with its Lalique light fixtures, the gold ceilings, the glass murals, the expensively made cases.
In 1944 the family sold their interest in the stores to Bullocks, a Los Angeles department store and in 1964 Bullocks became a part of Federated Department Stores. Then in 1988, Macys gained control of Federated. By 1994 the last I. Magnin stores were either closed or changed to the Macys name.
The Magnin family sold the chain to Amfac Corporation in 1969. In September 1984, bankruptcy closed the remaining twenty-four stores. During the 1960s, Betty Brader (born 1923) became one of the chief illustrators of Joseph Magnin posters; this collection is comprised primarily of her work.
