Card Verification Value or Card Verification code. A Card Verification Value (CVV or CVV2) or Card Verification Code (CVC) is the three- or four-digit security number on the front or rear of a payment card.
The CVV2 is a 3- or 4-digit value printed on the card or signature strip, but not encoded on the magnetic stripe. MasterCard, Visa, Discover credit and debit cards have a 3-digit code, called the CVC2 (card validation code), CVV2 (card verification value), and CID (card identification number), respectively.
The only difference between a CVV and a CVV2 is how the number is generated. The 2 signifies that a CVV2 was created using a second-generation algorithm, meaning the code is more secure and harder to guess. But functionally, a CVV and a CVV2 are the same.
CVV2/CVC2/CID is a security feature for transactions where your credit card is not physically present. It is a three or four digit value which provides our payment system with a check of your credit cards authenticity. The terms are generally used interchangeably.
The CVV2 Code is a 3-digit number printed on the back of the card near the signature line.
