The Kiowa and their confederates were among the last of the Plains tribes to capitulate to the U.S. Cavalry. Since 1868 they have shared a reservation with the Comanche between the Washita and Red rivers, centring on Anadarko, Oklahoma.
Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma is a federally recognized tribe with headquarters in Carnegie, Oklahoma. Their tribal jurisdiction includes Caddo, Comanche, Cotton, Grady, Kiowa, Tillman, and Washita counties. Their language is part of the Tanoan family and is still spoken today.

A Kiowa war chief, Satanta (Settainte, White Bear) was probably born circa 1819 on the southern Great Plains. An imposing figure, he was a renowned warrior and member of the Koitsenko soldier society. He emerged as a leader prior to 1850 and signed the Little Arkansas Treaty in 1865.
The Kiowas were part of the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867 and were assigned a reservation in Oklahoma in 1868. They never really confined their activities to the reservation, however, and in 1874 resumed warfare with the white settlers in the vicinity.
