- If you are at least 17 1/2, you may obtain a permit without driver education or driver training. However, you must bring in the forms to show you have completed driver education and driver training (DL 387, DL 388, DL 388A, OL 237, or OL 238) or wait until you are 18 to get a license.
In New York, a teen driver may apply for a junior driver's license once they've had their learner's permit for at least 6 months, completed a pre-licensing course, and fulfilled 50 hours of practice driving. A junior driver's license is the last step before a teen can obtain a full, unrestricted license.
Junior licenses still have restricted driving hours of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an exception if the driver is working or attending a school function. After 9 p.m., the driver can drive from work or school and directly home.
To apply for a California learner's permit, teens need to be between 15½ and 17½ years of age. If you are younger than 17½ you will have to complete an approved driver's education course that is taught by a state-licensed driver's education school and includes a minimum of 25 hours of instruction.
