A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) is a measurement instrument that tries to measure a characteristic or attitude that is believed to range across a continuum of values and cannot easily be directly measured.
The typical VAS is composed of a 10-cm straight line with the left end of the line labeled no pain and the right end of the line labeled worst pain imaginable. The patient is then instructed to mark where on the VAS he or she believes the pain being experienced at that point in time is located.
In summary, based on results of our study, VAS evaluates the pain not only in aspects of its intensity but also in its character and its affective perception by an individual as a complex experience in the recent time while NRS assessed the pain in aspects of its intensity in current time.
Patients are asked to mark a point on the line that best represents their pain. The distance from no pain to the patients mark is then measured and this equals the VAS score.
The findings suggested that 100-mm VAS ratings of 0 to 4 mm can be considered no pain; 5 to 44 mm, mild pain; 45 to 74 mm, moderate pain; and 75 to 100 mm, severe pain.
