In 1660 John Bunyan was imprisoned for 12 years in Bedford Gaol. It was here that he wrote The Pilgrims Progress.
It is bounded to the north by the unitary authority of Bedford, to the northeast by Cambridgeshire, to the southeast by Hertfordshire and the unitary authority of Luton, to the southwest by Buckinghamshire, and to the northwest by the unitary authority of Milton Keynes. The administrative centre is Chicksands.
Did you know that the worlds first tractor was invented in Biggleswade by local Dan Albone in 1902. Traditionally people from Bedfordshire are called Bedfordshire Bulldogs or Clangers. The term Clangers is derives from a traditional local dish made with a suet crust dumpling filled with jam, meat or both!
Bedfordshires eponymous dish is the Bedfordshire Clanger, a light pastry with both savoury and sweet fillings, described as being a meal on its own, you can find it all over the county, but the very best are made and served by Gunns Bakeries, who have branches in Biggleswade, Sandy and Bedford.
