Is a DD214 the Same as a Certificate of Eligibility? No, your DD Form 214 and Certificate of Eligibility (COE) are separate documents. A DD214 identifies a Veterans condition of discharge, while a COE formally documents your eligibility for a VA home loan. Lenders typically use the DD214 to obtain your COE.
A DD Form 214 proves military service. Obtaining a copy is essential if you want access to many of the benefits and services available to you.
To request a COE by mail, fill out a Request for a Certificate of Eligibility (VA Form 26-1880) and mail it to the address for your regional loan center. You can find the address on the last page of the form. Please note that mail requests may take longer than requesting a COE online or through your lender.
A certification of continuous active duty as of the date of note is required. Ensure the veteran is still on active duty before closing the loan. If the veteran is discharged or released prior to loan closing, request a new eligibility determination from VA.
Every active duty member is issued a DD Form 214 when they separate from the military (a DD Form 215 is a corrected version of a DD Form 214 and should also be accepted as a valid service record).
